Spill Control Solutions

Drain Protectors

Chemical Spill Containment & Prevention

A chemical spill may sound like something that is always a disaster, but with the right spill control solution it doesn’t have to be. With the correct formulation, urethane products can be used repeatedly and reliably to contain spills before they spread out to a large mess, or to unwanted areas like drains.

An effective spill control solution will keep you in compliance with any environmental permits you may have, such as a stormwater pollution prevention plan. Violation of these permits can result in hefty fines and can even halt business operations. Therefore, an effective spill prevention measure will save your business time and money in the case of an accidental spill.

Urethane Products as A Spill Control Measure

Urethane’s properties at a low durometer make it an excellent material choice for spill containment and prevention. Its unique tackiness allows it to adhere to most surfaces regardless of texture to create a tight seal around any size drain. So long as the sheet is at least 6 inches larger than the drain to be covered, it will act as a highly effective barrier to keep unwanted substances out. Urethane is a nonabsorbent material which cleans easily, so it can be reused again and again. Urethane also possesses a strong chemical resistance when compared to similar substances like elastomers and rubber. While already a low-cost solution to begin with, this reusability and durability further stretch the cost effectiveness of long-lasting drain protector sheets. PSI offers a variety of different urethane-based spill control solutions, including the DrainProtector™, DrainProtector™ II, conical drain plugs, and barrel patches.

Drain Protectors

PSI Urethanes proudly produces the world recognized DrainProtector™ Safety Seal, the first spill control product of its kind. Although a simple solution, its effectiveness as a spill control measure cannot be contested. A large dual durometer pad, one side features a low durometer tacky urethane to act as a seal around the drain. The other side features a still flexible but not sticky urethane for easy handling. Using the DrainProtector™ is as easy as placing the sheet, low durometer side down, on top of the drain to be covered. Ensure that there is at least six inches of material around the perimeter of the drain hole for maximum utility.

The DrainProtector™ II, a new addition to the line, is a solid single durometer sheet which is reversible. As opposed to the original DrainProtector™, both sides of the DrainProtector™ II can be used to seal off a drain. These sheets are preferred for their ease of use, low cost, and reusability. As with the original DrainProtector™, it is always recommended to use a sheet that is at least six inches larger than the drain hole that it will be covering for most effective results. These sheets are available in a variety of pre-cut sizes but can also be custom manufactured to specified dimensions to suit any customer’s needs.

Safety Seals

For circular drainage holes, like those found in most sinks, PSI offers a selection of conical urethane plugs. These plugs feature tapered walls to fit a variety of sizes while still creating a liquid tight seal. They are commonly used in testing labs to close off drains during cleaning and preventative maintenance procedures, or to be used in case of an accidental spill to reduce potential contamination. These plugs are available in a multitude of sizes, either as a variety pack of 4 or sold individually.

During shipping operations it’s a fairly common occurrence for 55-gallon drums to get damaged, which can be a big problem when those barrels contain dangerous or hazardous liquids. To remedy this, PSI is the sole manufacturer to currently offer urethane barrel patches. These grippy urethane patches are attached to a nylon belt which can be wrapped around a drum and secured using a ratchet. They are designed to be applied quickly and easily to minimize spillage. They are chemically compatible with many hazardous compounds, like hexane, butanol, and methanol to name just a few. Like the DrainProtector™ product line, these patches are also very easy to clean and reuse.

Maximize the Life of Urethane Spill Control Tools

There is some care required to maximize the use of urethane products, but the steps are quite simple. When using a urethane sheet to cover a drain, here are a few things to keep in mind. Before placing a sheet on a drain, always reference our guide to chemical compatibility between urethane and common liquid chemicals. If the spilled substance is not chemically compatible with urethane, you will certainly end up with a bigger mess than before. Once you’ve ensured that the spilled chemical will not degrade the urethane sheet, check the area around the drain you would like to cover and remove as much debris as possible. You can then place the sheet over the drain. To quickly create a tight seal with the surrounding area, you may gently step on the perimeter of the sheet so long as the spilled chemical has not yet reached the drain. Do not leave the urethane sheet in place for longer than 8 hours at a time. Extended exposure to chemical spills is not intended for these products. After the spill has been contained, proper cleanup and storage of your DrainProtector™ is essential to keeping it in good working condition. Always wash the sheet with warm water and the appropriate cleaner to remove the chemical it was in contact with, then pat dry with a cloth. Replace the plastic film that came with the DrainProtector™ and store it in its box in a cool, dry place. We recommend inspecting your urethane sheets monthly.
