3 Common Types of Safety Seals Explained

Urethane as An Effective Spill Control Solution

Urethanes are known for their strength and flexibility, but that’s not all that they have to offer. You may be surprised to learn that urethane products are also incredibly resistant to chemical wear. With this in mind, PSI Urethanes has developed urethane-based spill control solutions to mitigate spill-related safety risks in work environments where harsh chemicals are commonly used.

Our urethane safety seals are engineered to withstand up to 4 hours of chemical exposure to some of the most common abrasive chemicals, including the following:

  • Acetone
  • Chlorine Standard Solution (1000ppm)
  • Ethanol (95%)
  • Hydraulic Fluid
  • Hydrochloric Acid (18.5%)
  • Hydrogen Peroxide (30%)
  • Isopropyl Alcohol
  • Mineral Oil
  • Chlorine Bleach (5% Sodium Hypochlorite)
  • Sodium Hydroxide (40%)
  • Sulfuric Acid (50%)
  • Xylene
  • Gasoline
  • Antifreeze
  • Diesel Fuel.

… and that’s not all. You can view a full chemical compatibility guide for our key spill control offerings right here.

In a previous article, we discussed the importance of keeping reliable spill control tools in your workplace. Today, we will be taking a closer look at the types of polyurethane safety seals that we offer here at PSI Urethanes: drain protector sheets, conical drain plugs, and barrel patches.

Urethane Parts

Urethane Drain Protectors

Our flagship spill control solution is the one and only Original Polyurethane DrainProtector. This simple tool is incredibly effective at containing spills of all kinds, including those in the hazardous waste industry. This tool is great for protecting drainage holes that are not circular in shape, are covered by a grate, or are particularly large.

The DrainProtector has two distinct sides: the slick yellow side should face upward, and the tacky orange side should make contact with the area around the drain to create a tight seal. Alternatively, we also offer the DrainProtector II which has the advantage of being double sided. This makes it great for time-sensitive operations like containing accidental spills, since you don’t spend even a second thinking about which side faces up and which faces down. The DrainProtector II is also light weight for increased ease of handling.

In order to get the most effective seal your DrainProtector should have at least 6” of clearance from the outer edge of the drain on all sides. If our standard drain sizes aren’t large enough for your specifications, we would be happy to guide you through placing a custom order for a larger safety seal.

The DrainProtector provides a positive seal, which means that there is absolutely no chance of internal or external leakage when the sheet is applied properly to a drain.

Maintaining the DrainProtector is as easy as using it. Simply rinse the safety seal with warm water and a non-abrasive detergent, dry it with a lint-free cloth, re-apply the plastic film, and roll it around its original tube. It’s that easy!

Our spill control solutions are ideal for both accident prevention and even scheduled cleaning and maintenance.

Urethane Conical Plugs

Our conical plugs are designed to be used with round drain holes with a diameter of 6” or less. Each plug has a taper which allows it to seal most drain sizes which are smaller than the plug’s maximum diameter. The seal between the plug and the drain hole is completely air and liquid tight, preventing both internal and external leaks.

These conical urethane drain plugs are very easy to install and remove. To install a plug, simply place it in the drain hole and apply pressure to the top to create a leak proof seal. The soft urethane will flex around the drain hole and fill in any gaps created by an uneven drain surface. To remove a plug, just pull it out of the drain hole. Each drain plug features a small metal hook on the top where users can attach a string or chain to make removal even easier.

Conical drain plugs are typically used in controlled, indoor environments like testing labs to prevent potentially hazardous chemicals from contaminating water supplies. Our plugs can help your testing facility meet safety guidelines and environmental regulations as outlined by OSHA and the EPA.

Urethane Barrel Patches

The most unique spill control measure that we have to offer is the barrel patch safety seal. These small polyurethane patches are meant to serve as a fast and effective way to stop spills from holes in large containers like barrels and drums, which are subject to being knocked around and damaged during shipping operations. Currently, we are the only company manufacturing polyurethane barrel patches for spill control.

Our barrel safety seals are each outfitted with a tough nylon belt and a ratchet. This serves as a way to keep the urethane patch securely in place and apply pressure around the leak site. To suit a variety of container sizes, you can select a nylon belt length of 6’, 11’, or 27’ long.

Some common chemicals that our barrel patches are compatible with include:

  • Aluminum Salts
  • Gasoline
  • Naphtha
  • Barium Salts
  • Glycol Ether
  • Propylene Glycol
  • Boric Acid
  • Hexane
  • Sodium Hydroxide (50%)
  • Butanol
  • Jet Fuel (JP-5)
  • Tetrachloroethylene
  • Calcium Chlorite
  • Kerosene Triethylamine
  • Cupric Chloride
  • Methanol
  • Turpentine
  • Formaldehyde
  • Mineral Oil
  • Water
